Which states require CLS/MLS licensure?
Currently, 10 states require individual licensure: California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Tennessee, and West Virginia. All other states recognize national certification (ASCP, AMT) for employment.
How many CE hours do I need for renewal?
CE requirements vary by state. California requires 24 hours every 2 years, Florida requires 20 hours every 2 years, Tennessee requires 24 hours every 2 years, and several states have different renewal periods and fees. Use our CE Calculator to determine your exact requirements.
What is the difference between CLS, MLS, and MT?
CLS (Clinical Laboratory Scientist) and MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) are often used interchangeably and refer to the same professional level requiring a bachelor's degree and national certification. MT (Medical Technologist) is an older term for the same role, though some states still use it in their licensing statutes.
How long does it take to get a state license?
Processing times vary by state. California typically takes 4-6 weeks, New York can take 6-8 weeks, and Florida usually processes within 3-4 weeks. Begin your application at least 60 days before your start date or renewal deadline.
Are ASCP and AMT certifications accepted everywhere?
ASCP certification is recognized in all 50 states. AMT is also widely accepted but check with your specific state board and employer. Some states like California have their own rigorous certification process that goes beyond ASCP.
What happens if my license expires?

Can I transfer my license to another state?

What are P.A.C.E. approved CE providers?
P.A.C.E. (Provider Approval and Continuing Education) is a program by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) that approves continuing education providers. Courses from P.A.C.E. approved providers are accepted for ASCP certification renewal and many state boards.
