These three titles refer to the same professional level. The differences are largely historical and organizational. Choose the one your employer or certifying body uses.

CLS

Clinical Laboratory Scientist

The modern, widely recognized term for baccalaureate-level laboratory professionals. CLS is the standard credential used in most states and by the ASCP.

Education: Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or related field

Certification: ASCP, AMT, or NCA

Scope: Full laboratory practice across all departments

MLS

Preferred

Medical Laboratory Scientist

Interchangeable with CLS. MLS is the ASCP-preferred term but represents the exact same role, scope of practice, and certification pathway.

Education: Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science

Certification: ASCP MLS(ASCP) or AMT

Scope: Full laboratory practice across all departments

MT

Medical Technologist

An older term still used in some state licensing statutes and hospital job titles. MT and CLS/MLS refer to the same professional level in practice.

Education: Bachelor's degree (same as CLS/MLS)

Certification: ASCP MT(ASCP) or AMT MT(AMT)

Scope: Full laboratory practice across all departments
