Choosing Your CLS Certification Pathway

Clinical Laboratory Scientists have multiple certification options. Understanding each pathway helps you make the best choice for your career goals.

ASCP Certification

The ASCP Board of Certification offers the MLS(ASCP) credential, which is recognized in all 50 states. Eligibility requires graduation from an NAACLS-accredited program and passing a comprehensive exam.

AMT Certification

The AMT offers the MT(AMT) credential. It has slightly different eligibility requirements and is also widely accepted by employers across the country.

State-Specific Requirements

Only 10 states require state-specific licensure (CA, FL, HI, LA, MT, NV, NY, ND, TN, WV). Most employers in other states accept either ASCP or AMT certification.

Which Should You Choose?

The ASCP credential is the most commonly required by employers, but AMT is also well-respected. Many professionals hold both for maximum flexibility.
