Understanding ASCP vs AMT Certification

ASCP vs AMT: What is the Difference?

The two most recognized certification bodies for clinical laboratory professionals in the United States are the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and the American Medical Technologists (AMT). Both are widely accepted, but there are key differences worth understanding.

Certification Exams

ASCP offers credentials such as MLS(ASCP) and CLS(ASCP), while AMT offers the MLT(AMT) and MT(AMT) credentials. The exam content and eligibility pathways differ between the two organizations.

Renewal Requirements

ASCP requires renewal every three years with 36 CE contact hours. AMT requires annual renewal with continuing education as well. Check which credential your state recognizes for licensure.

Which Should You Choose?

Many professionals hold both certifications for maximum flexibility. If your state accepts either, consider factors like exam difficulty, cost, and which credential is more recognized by employers in your area.
